What Are Japanese Import Number Plates?

Some vehicles imported from the Japanese domestic market (JDM) have a number plate recess too small to fit a standard UK plate — a standard one-line plate (460mm) is too long, and a two-line plate is too tall, for some of these recesses. Import-size plates are made to a smaller format specifically to fit these vehicles, while keeping the registration characters legible and correctly proportioned for the format used.

Am I Eligible for Import-Size Plates?

Being a Japanese-made vehicle doesn't automatically qualify you for a smaller plate. Import-size plates with reduced character dimensions are only permitted where the vehicle doesn't have full UK/EU Whole Vehicle Type Approval and genuinely cannot accommodate a standard-size plate. If your vehicle can fit a standard plate, it should use one. Check your vehicle's specific eligibility before ordering — contact us if you're not sure.
